The LPG conversion process

The LPG conversion process consists of two main areas, the front installation consisting of the components mounted in the engine bay and the switch mounted inside the car. The other is the tank, filler and feed pipe to the front, which varies greatly on different types of vehicle.

The majority of vehicles from 1997 onwards would require a multi-injection system, there are a few exceptions that will run quite happily on an older style system without causing a conflict with the petrol system, the only advantage of running an older style system is to save cost on the conversion. As from the year 2000, with the introduction of on-board diagnostics (OBD) every thing should have multi injection sequential, meaning the information provided by the petrol control unit (ECU) is utilised to control the LPG injectors. What this means to you is a like for like performance and driveability between LPG and petrol, there should be no compromise on how your vehicle drives on LPG - just a BIG saving.

We recommend before your conversion date that you visit our premises to see a conversion in process; this will also enable us to discuss the options for locating the various components such as the switch and the filler. Also if it's not a vehicle we have converted before, your visit will give us an opportunity to discuss tank location and capacity.

Front end installation

The installation of the front end kit will vary greatly depending on the vehicle's engine bay layout, engine size etc. What doesn’t change is our quality.Front end installation Our aim is to integrate the LPG system so it looks like it was part of the car, almost factory fitted. This is not done just for aesthetic value, in our experience a little more time spent installing the system gives a greatly extended and trouble free service. Where we have to drill to mount components, the bare metal will be painted to prevent corrosion, all of our mounting brackets are custom made for your vehicle and primed and painted to protect them from the elements. Where possible the wiring will be run to follow existing wiring, and it will be covered in a protective shroud to give long-term protection. See our conversion gallery for examples of our work.

LPG gauge & gas/petrol switch

The combined Gas / Petrol LPG gaugeswitch and Gas tank level gauge is fitted neatly in to the dashboard, normally in to an available switch blank.

The Petrol / Gas switching is automatic, but allows you to over ride it yourself if required. Most systems are fitted with an audible buzzer to notify you of change in status of the LPG system.

The tank and filler

The installation of the The tanktank on the majority of cars is in place of the spare wheel and is referred to as a donut tank or a toroidal tank. This is an area of the car that can be used with no compromise to the load space. However a larger cylinder tank can be mounted on the boot floor if preferred, this option more often than not can give a greater capacity of fuel which can be essential to give enough range for the larger engine vehicles. Some vehicles such as 4x4's have space underneath, with this option a minimal ground clearance must be maintained to comply with the LPGA code of practice.

The usual location for the filler is mounted in the bodywork and where possible we will mount the gas The fillerfiller the same side as the petrol filler. Depending on the vehicle we can mount the filler in the centre at the rear as an alternative, perhaps on a bracket mounted on to the tow bar. The added advantage to this is that you can pull up to a pump either side to fill (the gas filling hoses aren't usually long enough to stretch round!). For a small additional cost we can have the gas filler cap colour coded, the standard ones are matt black finish, which on a light coloured car can look a little obvious.

We hope this gives you an understanding of the conversion process, however there is certainly no substitute for a visit to our premises and see the process first hand. So feel free to contact us with any questions you have or to arrange a visit.
